Librarians Helping Canadian Genealogists Blog Named One of the Best!

I'm honoured and very excited that my blog has been named one of seven best Canadian Genealogy Blogs by Internet Genealogy Magazine. In her list in the Feb/Mar 2010 issue of the magazine Janice Nickerson, Upper Canada Genealogy writes:

This is a great place to catch up on your Canadian genealogy news. Elise Cole, the author of this very descriptively named blog, is both a librarian and a genealogist, so knows whereof she speaks! As one might expect from a librarian, many of her posts are announcements and reviews of genealogy-related books -- these are very much appreciated.

New Online Resource: Immigrants to Canada

Taken from Global Genealogy's Global Gazette:

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce the launch of an online database, Immigrants to Canada.

The database contains Canadian immigration records held at LAC, many of which relate to immigrants from the British Isles arriving in Quebec and Ontario; also included are references to settlers in other provinces. Through this new database, researchers can access references to lists of immigrants and other types of records created before 1865, such as declarations of aliens and names of some Irish orphans.

You are invited to visit the database.

The contributions of many LAC staff were instrumental in the success of this project, and their efforts are much appreciated.

Leaving Ontario, Resources for Tracking Ontario Migrants is Fawne Stratford-Devai's latest book, available for sale at Global Genealogy in Campbellville, ON. In it, she offers leads for those who have hit the proverbial genealogical "brick wall" for ancestors who have left the province of Ontario. The bonus, according to Rick Roberts, writing for the Global Gazette, is her transcription of one of the resources she consulted when preparing the book.
